PFD knife placement |
When originally talking with mentors about what products
they prefer, I heard Lotus
Designs mentioned a lot as being a superiorly
designed PFD. I did more research and came across one I thought I'd like
but it turns out they are (at least when I was trying to buy one) hard
to find used/less expensive than the list $150 so I took a pleasant educational
jaunt up to see the wonderful folks at the Chicagoland
Canoe Base. They had a used touring
PFD (among many other things) for about $50, and decided to go for it. |
The
next step was to decide where to locate the knife. There are two equipment
clip attachments that came with it, one on the right abdomen, the other
used to be located on the left shoulder. The abdomen location doesn't
make sense for anything that could potentially snag on an arm, sleeve,
paddle, etc. The shoulder location was good as far as being clear of
snagging things, however, with my being left handed meant that if I left
the current shoulder clip where it was, I'd be either gripping it awkwardly
or drawing the blade across my neck - no good. |
So
I snipped the threads attaching the clip holder to the vest. Then I had
a friend hold it up while I held the knife where I wanted it, so that
the angle would be correct, and then she marked it with a colored pencil.
Finally I got a curved needle and some heavy thread and sewed it on in
the new location.I'm thinking I might end up moving it once I have
christened the boat and am actually going through the motions
that would potentially cause conflict. But for now I am happy with
the placement and methodology. When talking with another friend he
brought up the point that the Lumbar area might
be a good location, or under
arm.
